Producers are responsible for purchasing their own recording media prior to their recording session. Since Access SF's public hours are in the evening and Saturday, it may be difficult to run out and buy a tape at the last minute. Many sessions have been aborted because the producer forgot to bring a blank tape. When this happens, producers will walk around the station asking others for a blank tape. Although Access SF has a cabinet full of blank tapes, staff is not allowed to make them available to producers. Individual staff member have from time-to-time broken this rule, or offered to lend one of their own tapes. In those situations, we were often stiffed, because the producer neglected to replace the tape they "borrowed". Needless to say, staff is generally not inclined to "lend" tapes to producers.
As a staff member, I made a proposal that Access SF should offer recording media (tapes and DVDs) for sale to any producer who neglected to plan ahead. The Facil computer system already supports selling tapes, and SFCTC already has a resale license. Access SF could mark-up the price to encourage producers to plan ahead and purchase tapes elsewhere before their session. It seemed like a no-brainer to me.
The only argument I had against selling tapes, is that I didn't want Access SF to become a retail outlet. I thought my solution dealt with that, since we would only sell to producers with a current reservation who forgot to bring recording media. Further more, we would be selling the media at a marked-up price. We would be offering a life-line giving one last chance to salvage their recording session.
Aaron Vinck killed the plan because he said he didn't want to process the sales tax. I thought his argument was weak, since Facil already took care of the bookkeeping, and SFCTC already had to file the annual sales tax return. None the less, Zane agreed with Aaron.
Don't forget to bring a blank tape or DVD to your recording session.
