I've written about problems with playback before;
When we were having recurring problems with the TiltRac robotic claw, it was knocking a few programs off the air every few days. I asked Zane if I could send out a notice to the producers informing them about the hardware problem and our schedule to get it repaired, but he wouldn't let me. He said that I shouldn't bring it up, but if a producer calls and complains about their episode, we could go ahead and replay it. We routinely notified producers and reschedule episodes whenever we discovered a problem, but now Zane was telling me to stop notifying them and wait for their call. Again on Sunday, January 08, 2006, Zane would not let me contact the producers.
Yesterday morning, January 26, 2006, at 6:50 a.m. and 10:50 a.m., channel 29 was black. This is unexpected, since SCALA is configured to kick-in with PSAs when TiltRac fails to load a show. I don't know whose show was scheduled for those time slots, but they did not play.
SFCTC should be checking the TiltRac logs daily looking for playback problems. Each problem should be reported. The producer should be immediately contacted, and their episode should be rescheduled to a mutually agreeable time. The problem log, complete with explanations and resolutions, should be reported to all producers monthly. We have a right to know about recurring problems in playback, and what SFCTC is doing to correct the problems.
